How to Get into the Habit of Reading?

What is your reason and motivation for reading?

To get started, write down all the ideas that come to mind when you think about reading and how you find it enjoyable or meaningful. 

Make time reading in small chunks daily

Intentionally fit reading into your agenda, between all your commitments. Set a few times during your day-to-day activities when you’ll read – whether it is for 10-15 minutes or half an hour. Because, at the end of the day, when you add them all up, you might find out you read 45 minutes a day.

Or read in bigger chunks occasionally

You might be the type of person who really enjoys reading and gets absorbed in the information and details. An answer would be to reserve bigger chunks of time (e.g., on the weekend). Although it may not be ideal because you’re not reading daily, it’s important to take your personal preferences into account too. 

Make a TBR (To-Be-Read) list

There are so many good books to choose from that it can actually become overwhelming. Find out what genres you like and create a list of books you want to read by the end of the year (don’t overdo it).

Find your reading space

Assign one or more spaces for reading in your home. After reading for a while in one spot, your mind will automatically associate that certain place with reading. These book nooks can become powerful reading cues that help you make reading a habit. 

Reduce social media usage

Many people have a lot of time to spend on their phone scrolling or binge-watching a new Netflix show. We have time, we just need to set our priorities straight. If you’re bored, instead of grabbing your phone, grab your book.

Always have a book with you

Wherever you leave the house, bring a book with you. Before you open the front door, make sure to bring all your essentials: phone, wallet, keys, and your current book. 

Know when to give up on a book

With books, we’ve been conditioned to believe we should finish every book we start. Even though a primary point of reading is enjoyment. If you don’t find interest in your current book, give it up. Not every book will be for you, and in fact quitting books can help you define the types of books you actually enjoy.
